WINTER LAWN CARE - EASTBOURNE GARDENING

This page is, from Rye-Field Gardening is to give you help and advise on keeping your garden looking its best through each season of the year. In this blog we look at lawn care in the winter months.
WINTER
The evenings start to get shorter and the temperature begins to drop at night. Late September/October is a good time to get the lawn in shape for the winter and next year.
This is when proper scarifying of the lawn will rake out all the dead grass. Scarifying can be hard work and you need to do it on the right sort of day. It often makes a mess of your lawn, but it will recover if the ground is still warm and we get some showers.
This is also the time to aerate the lawn, again hard work but really worth while. Use a device from your local garden shop or a good fork, dependent on how much needs doing. Follow this with a winter top dressing fertiliser to strengthen the lawn for the winter.

Lawn food stimulates healthy root growth and toughens up the grass to help it withstand harsh winter weather. Your lawn will get off to a great start next spring and it will also help to control moss. For best results use Lawn food between early September and mid November when the weather is warm and the grass is dry. If no rain falls within two days water in thoroughly so that your food starts to work.

Remember to avoid walking on the lawn when there is frost or snow and now is a good time to get your lawnmower blades sharpened!!
